Windows Emulation for Mac Users

Certain programs (such as Information Technology or Data Analytics) require software that runs exclusively on Windows (e.g., Power BI, SAS, or specific Microsoft Access features).

Recommended: Parallels Desktop

Parallels is the most efficient way to run Windows applications on a Mac without restarting your computer.

  • Why use it? It allows you to run Mac and Windows apps side-by-side.
  • Compatibility: Optimized for both Intel-based and Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3) Macs.
  • Student Discount: Students can often receive a 50% discount on Parallels Desktop Pro with academic verification.
  • Resource: Learn more at Parallels.com

Other Solutions

  • Boot Camp: (Intel Macs only) A free utility that lets you install Windows on a separate partition. Requires a restart to switch between macOS and Windows.
  • VMware Fusion: An alternative virtualization tool similar to Parallels.

Productivity & Connectivity

Internet Access

  • Requirement: Broadband connection.
  • Recommended Speed: 25 Mbps download / 4 Mbps upload for optimal video and multimedia performance.

Required Software Suite

  • Microsoft Office 365 (web-based): Free for all CSU Global students (Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Adobe Acrobat Reader: For viewing PDF assignments.
  • Media Players: VLC Media Player or QuickTime.

Security & Authentication

  • Multifactor Authentication (MFA): All students must set up two-factor authentication to access the Student Portal and Canvas. Failure to set this up will result in a loss of access to university services.
  • Students will be required to install software that requires administrative access to the device (laptop or desktop).
