Freedom Service Dogs Guide Veterans to Better Future

Share

On Jan. 14, 2021, CSU Global sponsored the winter graduation ceremony for the Freedom Service Dogs of America, an organization dedicated to training service dogs for clients with conditions such as autism, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injuries, and more, in addition to veterans with post-traumatic stress (PTS).

CSU Global continues to proudly support U.S. military service member students and alumni, as well as organizations such as FSD that provide life-changing services to their clients.

About Freedom Service Dogs of America

Freedom Service Dogs has been in service since 1987. At that time, the assistance dog industry was in its infancy, but in the last few decades, founders Michael and PJ Roche have transformed FSD from a two-person operation to one of the leading service dog training organizations in the country.

As FSD grew, it recognized that returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan were in special need of additional support upon re-entering civilian life. In response, FSD launched Operation Freedom, providing custom-trained service dogs to veterans with disabilities or trauma.

What Service Dogs Do

Service dogs can help their owners perform a variety of daily tasks, including:

  • Retrieving items from the refrigerator.
  • Pushing handicap buttons on doors.
  • Turning lights on and off.
  • Opening and closing doors.
  • Helping with balance on stairs or unstable ground.
  • Providing a brace for transfers in and out of wheelchairs.
  • Helping to pull wheelchairs.
  • Retrieving and carrying dropped objects.
  • Going for help in an emergency.

In addition to these functions and more, service dogs form an invaluable emotional bond with their owners, providing them with stability and companionship during difficult times. Clients with service dogs show significant psychological, social, and even economic improvement.
