COMPETENCY BASED EXAM (CBE)

If you’re a self-motivated, independent learner, you can earn credits toward your CSU-Global bachelor’s degree faster than you would through traditional, instructor-led courses.

You’ll save money on tuition, too. To earn credit through our CBE, you’ll simply take a proctored exam that will test your knowledge of that particular subject area.

How It Works

You’ll get help preparing for your CBE. CSU-Global offers study prep materials, including a suggested textbook, to help you improve and test your understanding of the material.

When you’re ready to sit for the exam, you’ll pay a non-refundable exam fee of $250 per 3-credit CBE, or $150 per 1-credit CBE. If you receive a score of 70% or higher on the exam, you’ll receive the undergraduate college credits equivalent to that specific course.

CBEs are considered nonresident credits, and they will apply toward an undergraduate degree at CSU-Global. If you transfer to another institution, that receiving institution may or may not accept your CBE credits, at their discretion.

If you plan to transfer to another institution before you finish your degree, you should submit your CBE Study Guide to that institution before you invest in a CBE.

CBE exam credit is not approved for Colorado gtPathway guaranteed transfer. Because CBEs are not considered resident credit, your CBE credit courses will be marked on your transcript with an "EX" suffix (for instance, SOC101EX Introduction to Sociology).

Fill out the form to the right to request more information about the credit opportunities available through CSU-Global. If you're a current student, you can also find additional information about CBEs and other alternative sources of credit through the Student Portal.
