CSU Global monitoring potential national data breach involving Canvas

Overview

Colorado State University Global is monitoring an IT security incident involving Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, our learning management system. This is a nationwide issue that may affect multiple higher education institutions.

Canvas access has been fully restored and is functioning normally. You should now have full access to your classes at https://csuglobal.instructure.com.

We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigated this widespread service outage.

Important Information Regarding Deadlines: To support you during this disruption, we are extending the deadline for all Initial Discussion Board posts that were originally due on Thursday evening to tonight, May 8th at 11:59 PM MT. Please reach out to your instructor directly should you have any questions.

Canvas is experiencing an unplanned service outage. Please be advised that this is a widespread, national issue affecting institutions across the country, and Canvas technical teams are working urgently to resolve it.

Deadlines & Extensions: Due to this disruption, we are extending the deadline for all Initial Discussion Board posts originally due by 11:59 PM MT tonight. We will provide a finalized new deadline once service has been fully restored to ensure you have ample time to submit.

Status Updates: Please do not submit individual Helpdesk or tech support tickets for this issue, as our teams are already aware and working on it. You can monitor real-time progress directly via the official Canvas status page: status.instructure.com.

Next Steps: Our leadership team is monitoring the situation closely. We will share more information regarding further adjustments or resolutions as soon as they become available.

Colorado State University Global is monitoring an IT security incident involving Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, our learning management system. This is a nationwide issue that may affect multiple higher education institutions.

Instructure has confirmed the incident and indicated that core Canvas systems remain operational. Canvas continues to be available and fully functional for faculty, staff, and students.

CSU Global requires its vendors to meet rigorous security and data protection standards. User passwords are managed within CSU systems and are not shared with Canvas or other third‑party platforms. Because our passwords are managed internally, they were not compromised.

Instructure has taken immediate mitigation steps and is working with external cybersecurity experts as their investigation continues. They have not yet determined the extent of the information that may have been compromised or if any CSU Global community members were impacted.

We are actively monitoring the situation and remain in close communication with Instructure. Updates from the vendor are being posted on their Canvas status page, and CSU Global will share additional information if new details become available.
