Specialization in Public Health Leadership

As the challenges faced in public health continue to grow and become more varied, the skills of practitioners must also be broadened. The traditional technical skills that are critical to performing the core functions must now be expanded to include greater management and, most important, leadership skills. Students in this specialization will learn the importance of influencing, motivating, and enabling others to contribute to the effectiveness and success of public health programs and initiatives.

HCM430 - Population Health Management

Course Description

Students will be introduced to the multifaceted concepts of population health as it relates to stakeholders in the health system, determinants of health, and sociopolitical factors. Major topics include health care policy and reform, health behavior change, data analytics for population disease management, workplace health, and translation of effective research into practice. Special emphasis will be placed on developing basic skills relevant to community assessment and health promotion strategies. Assignments and discussions provide opportunities to apply epidemiological analysis techniques with an emphasis on assessment of challenges and benefits of population-based interventions. Recommended Prior Course: HCM310

PHL450 - Leading Quality Improvement in Public Health

Course Description

Students will be introduced to determinants of health and epidemiology within the practice of public health. The use of data, tools and analysis are investigated to promote quality within the community or population. The student will develop a strategic promotion plan to advocate for change on behalf of a specific stakeholder group.

PHL460 - Principles in Public Health Leadership

Course Description

In this course students will assess the basis of public health, the professions, institutions, and systems that participate. Provided content on communication, policy, and financing increases comprehension of these complex items. Case studies and activities will prepare students for leadership roles with the public or population health setting.

PHL470 - Public Health Marketing

Course Description

Students will be introduced to the various threats to public health and the activities of public health promotion. The areas of environment, nutrition, women, children health, disease and mental health will be investigated. The identification of interventions for specific health issues will be discovered, as well as the audience for targeted messaging.

PHL480 - Project Management Principles & Practices

Course Description

In this course, students will explore the fundamental processes of managing a public health project. The steps within the management process are identified and supported with examples from healthcare practice.
