As Provost, Dr. Savory will drive academic innovation and student professional success for the nation’s first fully online, state university
Colorado State University Global President Pamela Toney has named Dr. Paul Savory to become the institution’s next provost. His appointment is effective Jan. 18, succeeding Interim Provost Dr. Angela Hernquist, who will assist in the transition through her new role as the university’s Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.
As provost, Dr. Savory will serve as the Chief Academic Officer, providing leadership, direction, and evaluation of all academic and educational activities—including but not limited to accreditation, educational policies, programs, processes, and personnel as it relates to CSU Global’s strategic plan—to help ensure the continued focus on providing modern learners with high-quality, career-relevant academic offerings that deliver workplace success with a quantifiable return on investment.
“When we began our search for this position, we understood that it was important to find a leader with a depth of experience in higher education leadership, a commitment to data-driven decision making, and an understanding of how to develop career-relevant curriculum in an online environment,” said President Toney. “We sought a candidate who could engage with faculty and community stakeholders alike to provide innovative educational opportunities for our students. Dr. Savory not only fulfills all these criteria but also brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in teaching and learning that will further elevate our student experience.”
Dr. Savory comes to CSU Global as a distinguished teacher, researcher, and author with over 25 years of higher education and industry experience. Most recently he served as provost and executive vice president of Doane University in Nebraska. Dr. Savory’s higher education experience also includes serving as vice president of academic affairs at Nebraska Methodist College, where he helped launch 10 new programs. He also has extensive teaching and university leadership experience from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL), where he served as a distinguished professor in the Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Department and the Department of Management. During his time at UNL, Dr. Savory also served as interim associate vice chancellor for extended education & outreach, where he developed innovative strategies for expanding online education. In addition to his expertise in higher education, Dr. Savory comes to CSU Global with corporate experience as a strategist and data analytics scientist at Union Pacific, a Fortune 200 company.
“It is an honor to be selected as provost of CSU Global, the premier online university in the nation,” said Dr. Savory. “I want to thank President Toney and the entire CSU Global community for the opportunity. I look forward to working with faculty to provide an outstanding educational experience that prepares students to be successful for challenges and opportunities in a changing world.”
Dr. Savory earned a B.S. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Operations Research from Oregon State University. He completed his doctorate in Industrial Engineering at Arizona State University.
As a former corporate strategist, Dr. Savory is keenly aware of the importance of collaboration with industry leaders to ensure students are career-ready. “I am eager to collaborate with stakeholders to develop cutting-edge online opportunities for our students, ” he said. “Fostering employer relationships is a key tactic for how CSU Global stays ahead of the curve and prepares its students for a changing world and workforce.” Dr. Savory also understands that academics is just one of the many responsibilities held by today’s learners. “I am proud to be a part of a university that allows students to balance career, family, and personal commitments with their desire to advance their education.”
Dr. Savory’s appointment was made after a thorough search process that included members of the CSU Global Governance Council, CSU Global academic and administrative leadership, and an open interview panel with faculty.
