A message regarding the executive order to dissolve the U.S. Department of Education | CSU System

Colleagues,

President Trump issued an Executive Order this afternoon directing his Secretary of Education to take all necessary steps permitted by law to dissolve the U.S. Department of Education. In announcing this move, President Trump noted specifically that Pell Grants, Title I funding, and resources for special education will be preserved, with responsibility for those transferred to other departments. This is in line with a letter we received late last week from the DOE, which noted that other statutory programs approved by Congress also will continue,  including federal student financial aid and FAFSA; support for accreditation and negotiated rule-making; funding and program functions for TRIO, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Tribal Colleges and Universities, Minority-Serving Institutions, community colleges, and GEAR Up; support for career and technical education; and support for international and foreign language education.

The Department was established by Congress as a Cabinet-level agency, so under the law, closing it entirely would require Congressional approval and likely a super majority of 60 votes in the Senate. At this time, we anticipate continuation of the programs key to the CSU System, its faculty, staff, and students. We will be monitoring this issue closely, working with our elected officials and national organizations and coordinating with campus leadership. As always, we will share more information as it is available.

Sincerely,

-tony
