The Graduate Certificate in Educator Licensure-Science program is a nationally recognized certificate that proves your proficiency in effective teaching, leadership, and knowledge of best-practices in the classroom. Through a combination of 100% online coursework and a part-time internship, future educators are able to apply what they’re learning in real time.

This state-approved, online educator licensure program consists of seven courses for a total of 24 credit hours. This program is also offered as a concentration within the Master of Science in Teaching and Learning.

Due to state authorizations, this program may not be available in all states, see the State Specific Authorization Policy regarding internships and practica.

* This certificate is pending final approval from the Department of Education, and is not yet eligible for Title IV funding from the Department of Education.

Admission Requirements

Students interested in completing the educator licensure- science program must complete additional provisions. The following documents must be submitted through the Student Portal no later than 14 days prior to start of the term in which the student wishes to enroll in OTL501:

  • Official documentation of a passing score of 152 on the Praxis II General Science (#0435 or #5435) exam. Visit the state's website for more information.
  • A vision statement defining view of "effective teachers”
  • Evidence of interest in teaching, either through direct experience or expressed commitment.
  • A resume that includes all collegiate work, professional employment, teaching skills, teaching or training experience, special skills, publications, exhibitions, awards, and service activities
  • A reference letter indicating that the candidate has the skills and disposition to be an effective teacher.
  • Other requirements: fingerprints, bachelor’s degree with minimum GPA of 3.0.

Career Outlook

According to the Teacher Preparation Shortage Areas of 2014-15, math and science teachers in particular are needed in the following states: Alabama, Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida (only Biology), Hawaii, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Wyoming (only Science).

Program

The Graduate Certificate in Educator Licensure-Science consists of seven courses totaling 24 credits:

  • 4 Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) courses
  • 3 theory courses
  • 6 credits of student teaching

In order to meet the state requirement of 800 hours of classroom experience, students must student teach or intern in a school at least 17 hours per week for no more than 12 months, while concurrently enrolled in the first seven courses.

The assignments in the educator licensure program will be performance-based and require that the candidates implement what they are learning in the coursework of a K-12 school setting under the guidance of a school mentor, who is a licensed science or mathematics teacher, CSU-Global faculty member, and internship coordinator.

In order for students to complete their coursework, they will register in OTL595 – Student Teaching during the final term.

Courses

The Graduate Certificate in Educator Licensure-Science consists of seven courses totaling 24 credits:

  • 4 Office of Teaching and Learning (OTL) courses
  • 3 theory courses
  • 6 credits of student teaching
  • RES501: Fundamentals of Research and Writing

    This course is only required for students who are accepted into this program with an undergraduate GPA below 3.00.

    The primary purpose of this course is to help students entering graduate level programs at CSU-Global develop awareness of current and effective research and writing practices with the goal of implementing such practices into their writing and research projects. Students will learn what constitutes graduate level writing and research as well as how to communicate with colleagues in online professional forums. Students will also learn to effectively integrate writing and research skills into the writing projects they will pursue throughout their graduate level programs.

  • OTL501: Educator Effectiveness

    Examine the goals and objectives for integrating math and literacy into content area instruction, making instruction and content relevant to students, fostering safe and nurturing learning environments for students, engaging students in personalized learning, integrating technology into instruction to maximize student learning, advocating for partnerships to support students and families, and demonstrating high ethical standards and leadership capacity.

  • OTL590: Student Teaching I

    This course serves as an applications-based opportunity for students to engage in school settings. During this course the student will secure their 7-12 school placement and mentor. They will work with their mentor to become acquainted with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for the application of complex components of quality teaching. This course is a replacement course for OTL595 as of the 2017-2018 Fall trimester. Students cannot receive credit for both of these courses.

  • OTL502: Learning Theories and Models of Instruction

    This course provides students with an introduction to learning theories. A variety of theoretical constructs are studied to address diverse learning styles and conceptual frameworks for engaging learners. Students will explore theoretical perspectives on learning, cognition, and cognitive development. By examining a range of principles, perspectives and tools, students will gain an understanding of learning and teaching in a variety of contexts. Students will use problem solving, application, and evaluation skills to analyze the theories and practices of educational organizations.

  • OTL518: Effective Science Instruction

    The science educator will demonstrate their ability to engage students in scientific investigation to build models and theories about the natural world; emphasize crosscutting concepts that have application across all domains of science, and; design instruction and assessment around the most important aspects of science that provide a key tool for understanding or investigating more complex ideas and solving problems.

  • OTL539: Theory and Practice in Backward Design

    Introduction to instructional system design theories and models used in Pre-K-12 learning environments and nontraditional settings with a focus on backward design. This course is a replacement course for OTL540k as of the 2017-2018 Fall term. Students cannot receive credit for both these courses.

  • OTL547: Evaluation and Assessment

    Examination of methods and techniques for evaluation and assessment of learning in Pre-K-12 settings with a focus on instructional improvement and student achievement. Students who take OTL541K will not be able to apply this credit towards any program requiring OTL547. Students in the Masters of Science in Teaching and Learning program prior to the 2017-2018 Fall trimester take OTL541k.

  • OTL565: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity in the Differentiated Classroom

    An examination of the theories and concepts that define cultural and linguistic diversity with an emphasis on the theory and methods for creating multiple pathways of learning to accommodate students with varying backgrounds of knowledge, readiness, language, interest, and learning styles.

  • OTL591: Student Teaching II

    This course serves as an applications-based opportunity for students to engage in school settings. Educators become acquainted with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for the application of complex components of quality teaching. Students will be provided with resources and feedback to support them in applying for a teaching license and teaching jobs. This course is a replacement course for OTL595 as of the 2017-2018 Fall trimester. Students cannot receive credit for both of these courses.

  • OTL504: Social, Ethical, and Legal Issues in 21st Century Learning

    This course provides educators with an overview of the legal, ethical, and social issues that are unique in the 21st century learning environment. Topics such as learner privacy online, the appropriate uses of newer technologies, copyright, and intellectual property on the Internet will be presented. Students will also examine privacy law and contemporary legal issues of the 21st century classrooms.

  • OTL545: Technology and Innovation

    This course presents how present and emerging technologies are transforming society and schools and the implications these changes have for teaching and learning. Strategies for building students' critical thinking habits, innovation, and creativity with respect to new technologies and media will be developed in the context of 21st century literacies (information, visual, etc.). Students will explore the practical context for the use of technology and will develop skills that identify and address the challenge of using technology creatively in teaching and learning situations today.

  • OTL568: Action Research

    Advanced examination of an educator led research approach with an emphasis on instructional improvement and student learning.

  • OTL579: Research-Based Professional Project OR OTL581: Capstone - Researching Effective Educational Programming

    Students have the option of selecting OTL579 or OTL581 as the capstone course of this program. See the Academic Catalog for full course descriptions. Both options represent a culmination of the knowledge and skills gain throughout the M.S. in Teaching and Learning program.

* Master’s Plus - Some M.S. in Teaching and Learning students may be required to take RES501 as part of their program if they have an undergraduate GPA below 3.00. In this case, the degree is 39 credits.
